Reading Sewage Treatment Works
As the systems integrator for the new Reading STW Adsyst designed, developed and commissioned the site wide SCADA Genesis32 system gathering data for display and logging from 14 PLC systems as well as providing PLC integration for the main process areas such as the Inlet Works, BNR Plant, RAS/FST Plant and the Sludge Handling areas.
Allen-Bradley ControlLogix PLC’s were used to control and monitor plant items as well as communication to other package plant PLC’s over a number of different communication networks including Ethernet, Profibus DP, Profibus PA and Modbus
Profibus DP and PA was used as the primary control fieldbus interfacing to plant items such as valves, level controllers and other instrumentation from a number of different equipment manufacturers such as Rotork, Endress & Hauser, Siemens and Danfoss. A transparent interface between the Profibus DP and PA networks was achieved using a Pepperl & Fuchs segment coupler.
Although an element of additional design was required when planning out the Profibus solution this was more than made up with the savings on I/O loop tests and commissioning time due to management of instrument setup and diagnostic information.
The success of this project was undoubtedly due to the strong partnership, trust and the sharing of knowledge between Adsyst and the Target Alliance team at Reading STW. We always felt welcomed as an extension to our client’s own engineering resource on this project, it is their confidence and trust which enabled us to perform and deliver a complex system on time and within budget.
We coded this project using and developing Thames Water software modules. Both the ControlLogix PLC modules and the Genesis32 SCADA modules will be available in our in house library to be utilized as required for future Thames Water projects.
